A few golden leaves hold onto the lower valleys while the mountains above become increasingly bare. Instead of hiding the landscape, the changing forest begins to reveal it. Ridges that were tucked behind summer foliage suddenly become visible again, and long views open along familiar trails.
It is a wonderful time to return to Montreat for a cool-weather hike or take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway when conditions allow.
The experience is different from October.
There are fewer people competing for overlooks. The woods are quieter. Dry leaves crunch beneath your feet, and the colder air makes the warmth waiting back at the cottage feel especially good.

By this point, the tables have taken on the character of the late harvest. Cool-weather vegetables, fresh breads and pastries, meats, cheeses, eggs, flowers, and locally made goods replace some of summer’s abundance.
It feels particularly appropriate just before Thanksgiving—a chance to meet the growers and makers who help define the food culture of the Swannanoa Valley.
There is something satisfying about walking home from a chilly November market with fresh bread, local produce, or something handmade tucked under your arm.
And soon afterward, the market begins its transition toward its holiday season and Christmas markets.
A couple of days later, on Friday, November 6, Crystal Fountains performs at Appalachian Mountain Brewery Outpost & Kitchen in nearby Old Fort. It makes for an easy early-evening excursion—live music, food, and local beer before heading back to Black Mountain.
Later in the month, the Black Mountain Center for the Arts continues its intimate performance calendar, offering the kind of live music and cultural evenings that fit naturally into a November stay.
These are the kinds of nights we enjoy most—dinner, a little music, and still plenty of time to come home and settle beside the fire.
Parents, grandparents, kids, cousins—somebody inevitably organizes a Thanksgiving football game before dinner. It is one of those wonderfully simple traditions that fits naturally in a mountain town surrounded by parks, lawns, and open spaces.

Nearby Beradu in Cheshire Village has offered Thanksgiving take-home selections including North Carolina turkeys, prepared sides, and charcuterie—an easy way to put a beautiful holiday meal on the table without spending the entire day in the kitchen.
Or, if you would rather make Thanksgiving dinner an outing, Pack’s Tavern in downtown Asheville is a popular regional option for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Holiday offerings and reservations can change from year to year, so we recommend confirming details before your trip.
Then come home, change into something comfortable, and gather around the fire.
Sometimes the best part of Thanksgiving is simply having everyone in the same place.
