Our Black Mountain Local Food Guide

Food, Lovely Food....In and Around Black Mountain

Within a block....

Take a right out of the driveway, three doors down is Fresh Pizza. It’s brick oven fired gourmet pizza and pasta with ingredients sourced from local farmers. They also have a good selection of local brews.

Across the street from ‘Fresh’ you’ll find Lookout Brewing.  This is our neighborhood minimalist micro.  Seriously laid back mountain vibe; suitable for family.

Really good hazy IPAs and Stout.

One Block…

Take a right out of the driveway and then a left on State St and on your right….Black Mountain Bistro: Lunch/dinner comfort food, small bar, charming, great outdoor seating.

*Two Blocks:  Moving along State St. at the next block turn left on Richardson St., two doors down is La Guinguette Creperie-our neighborhood’s little secret.  A cozy converted cottage serving exciting French and Latin (Argentine) cuisine, some would say an acquired taste…a wonderful, hidden date spot.  FYI: service can be slow, but if you’re not in a hurry and want to explore, this is a gem. Closed Mon/Tues.

* Nearby West St…the fourth house on your right is Mac’s, where you’ll find the best burger joint in town.  The Macs burger with chili all the way is the winner.

*Three blocks away on Broadway,  you’ll find Black Mountain Brewing, with the lovely Roberta Flack mural.  Flack was born in Black Mountain in 1937.  She is an American treasure.  There is a food truck in the back.

*Across the street on Broadway, look for Cousins Cuban Cafe:  a 5 star unpretentious but award winning food cafe.  Next generation immigrants, Betty and MaeLynn, cousins and owners, usually on site, bring their parents’ authentic traditional recipes to the Black Mountain community.  One of the things I love about this town.  Bienvenidos!

Center of town…

Back on State St. you’ll eventually run across Cherry St. and the center of town, with lots of dining options within a block:

*Foothills Butcher and Bar kitchen:  bright and airy hub for pasture raised beef, cocktails, and grab and go butcher cuts for beautiful home meals.  Across the RR tracks in the historic train depot section of town.

*The Trailhead:  unassuming setting but really good food…creative American fare and great draft beer selection. Excellent service, lots of GFO menu items, and the best location in Black Mountain make this a local favorite.  The special of the day and/or the soup of the day (made fresh every morning) is always the best thing on the menu.

*The Kitchen and Alehouse: The Kitchen is only open for dinner except wknds open lunch and dinner.  Great steaks and burgers, awesome shrimp and grits(!) when they have it. Outdoor seating available and the place to go for Sporting/Televised events.

*The Veranda:  Delish, traditional southern fare. Only open for lunch.  The Mcdibbs Roast Beef Aus Jus(!).

*Thai Basil: remarkably good Thai for the setting (a converted gas station).  Great sake!

*My Father’s Pizza: famous Black Mountain landmark pizza.  Great outdoor seating area.  Very family friendly.

Coffee: Here’s the full list….

*Dynamite Coffee (about a mile west on I-70) is a well-established local roaster/distributor of craft coffee beans. Locals buy for their habit here by the pound.  No WiFi.  Take-out only.

*The Dripolator is Black Mountain’s local coffee house landmark at the epicenter of town. Free WiFi.

*Sassafras on Sutton’ (next door to the Train Depot) has barista service, comfortable couches, and a wonderfully eccentric bookstore and gifts. Spotty WiFi.

*Starbucks: (4 block walk across the RR tracks).  The usual great Starbucks service/free WiFi.

Breakfast and lunch…

*Louises (5 mn walk from the house) is everyone’s favorite for location and setting:  charming, a local’s destination…simple breakfast food with great service.  Try their Mimosas and one of their sausage dishes (from Hickory Nut Gap Farm).

*Open Oven:  Another local favorite because the service and food are 5 star fantastic, creative, and consistent. Lovely pastries.

*Blue Ridge Biscuit Company: don’t let the strip mall facade stop  you, or the line out the door.  Service is fast and there is seriously good food inside.  It’s a trip to get there, but so worth it.  Always crowded.

Fine Dining:

Que Sera: (upscale/casual) dining in the historic train depot district. Gourmet southern, Cajun-creole seafood cuisine.  This is everyone’s night out go to.  The beauty of Que Sera is it’s sister “Tayloe’s Oyster Bar” restaurant located next door.  Tayloe’s usually has some of the best oysters in WNC, as well as, sharing most of the menu from Que Sara, so it’s the place to go if you only have one night out.  Reservations recommended.

Deserts:

*Kilwins: this is a fudge and ice cream chain, but it’s an awesome chain.  The sea salt caramel fudge is just hard to stop eating.

*La Guinguette Creperie: crepes to die for.  Just around the corner.

*Hey Hey Cupcake:  Who would have known there was a cupcake craze going on, but go here for your fix.  Adorable storefront, fun staff, these are not your Mothers cupcakes-Lavender, Red Velvet-Carrot, Peanut Butter-Oreo, Bonita Margherita, and Salted Caramel.  Middle of town. Fun store.

*Dairy King:  open late after everything else closes.

Superlatives:

Best All-around:  Miltons at the Buena Vista Hotel, is impressive.  The bar located in the lobby alcove as you enter has a great outdoor seating area.  The Red Rocker Inn, receiving equally high marks (dress casual) has traditional fare in a wonderfully converted home with a wrap around porch to BNB setting.  For  really great Sushi, Sake Sushi in  Cheshire Village is a 2 mn drive but worth it.  Just next door to Sake, the Artisan Gourmet: a cozy/comfortable (small-four table) cafe for breakfast, lunch, dinner and decadent pastries. Charming date spot, and it’s next door to a gourmet market selling wines, and local goods. For the Best Easy Family Restaurant:  Ole Guacamole.  Get a table outside and order the table side guacamole.  They make it fresh right there. Great service, reasonable, always packed.
