Black Mountain Holly Jolly Celebration

A Cozy Tale of Holiday Magic

A Cozy Tale of Holiday Magic in Black Mountain

December in Black Mountain carries its own rhythm — quieter, softer, more luminous. The mountains trade their autumn fire for the shimmer of frost, their ridges glistening under Carolina blue skies. And after our first snowfall, the world outside feels touched by stillness. This is the time for gathering, reflection, and warmth — where cozy interiors, glowing lights, and joyful celebrations turn the cold into something beautiful. The following are some of my favorite things about the Black Mountain holidays…and we will have the Christmas decorations up this year.

Holly Jolly: The First Friday of December

Black Mountain Holly Jolly Celebration

The first weekend of December brings one of Black Mountain’s most beloved celebrations — Holly Jolly and the Christmas parade, held Friday, December 5, 2025 and Saturday, December 6. Main Street fills with laughter, music, treats, and glowing storefronts. It’s the town at its best — cheerful, connected, and brimming with warmth. Come stroll beneath the lights, sip cocoa from local cafés, and browse the festive shops before returning to your own private winter retreat.

Circle of Lights at Lake Tomahawk

Cirlce of Lighs

Held annually after the Black Mountain Christmas Parade. A magical evening luminary walk around the lake, featuring 200 glowing lanterns, complimentary hot chocolate or cider from Four Sisters Bakery, and sweet treats while supplies last. One of the most peaceful, festive, and photo-worthy nights of the season.

Even in the quieter winter season, Black Mountain comes alive each week with music, lights, local gatherings, and cozy mountain experiences. Here are some guest favorites to enjoy during your December stay:

Traditional Celtic Music Sessions at White Horse Black Mountain

Celtic Jam

Every 2nd & 4th Wednesday – Free Event

  • White Horse hosts a true Irish-style session, rooted in the Celtic traditions that shaped Appalachian mountain music. Musicians gather around in a casual, communal circle to share fiddle tunes, pipes, ballads, and stories — just like the pubs in Ireland and Scotland.
  • A beautiful way to experience the soundtrack of the mountains.

Rooftop Drinks & Views – Hell or High Water

Hell OR Highwater

Every Friday–Sunday, early afternoons through sunset

  • Kick off your weekend with panoramic winter mountain views from Black Mountain’s rooftop bar. Enjoy cocktails, wine, craft spirits, and small bites as the sun drops behind the frosted ridges. Dinner service starts at 5pm, but you’re welcome to enjoy the rooftop throughout the afternoon.

Tuesday Trivia at Lookout Brewing: Not Rocket Science Team Trivia

Every Tuesday – Free to Play

  • Hosted by the delightful Rebecca, this weekly trivia night is a local favorite. Come early for seating, grab a burger from Mac’s, enjoy ½-price bottles of wine, and join the fun. Family- and pet-friendly, indoors or out.
     Appalachia Christmas

Christmas in Appalachia – A Singin’, Strummin’ Family Show!

  • Black Mountain Center for the Arts – Sunday, December 21, 2–4pm
  • Tickets: $15 adults / $10 youth (ages 6–17)
  • This heartwarming show features old-time Appalachian music, storytelling, audience sing-alongs, and tales of mountain holiday traditions.
  • Learn about “Old Christmas,” “Ruling Days,” “Serenading,” and classic seasonal lore — all brought to life with traditional Appalachian instruments.

A Night at the Biltmore Estate

Biltmore Christmas

Each year, Candlelight Christmas Evenings at Biltmore bring grandeur to the season. From November through early January, this iconic estate transforms into a holiday dreamscape — candlelit corridors, towering Christmas trees, live choirs, and roaring fireplaces.

Guests of Intown Cottages can make the evening effortless by purchasing discounted tickets directly through our Intown Guest Store.

Gingerbread Wonders at Grove Park Inn

Just outside Asheville, the National Gingerbread House Competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn runs from November 18 – January 4, displaying whimsical, hand-crafted masterpieces that feel like something from a holiday storybook. Families and couples alike will love this creative tradition that smells faintly of sugar and spice, echoing the essence of the season.

Spa Evenings Under the Frost

When night falls and the air turns crisp, there’s something magical about stepping into the steam shower, infrared sauna, or private hot tub at Intown Cottages. The contrast of cool mountain air and gentle heat creates an unforgettable kind of calm — the mist rising against the cold night sky, the stars sharp above the ridgelines.

Blue Sauna 3

It’s one of the simplest luxuries of the season: to unwind surrounded by silence, the warmth melting away winter’s edge.
