There’s a soft magic that settles on Black Mountain when November and December arrive. The brilliant parade of fall colors has waned, but in its place comes something quieter, cozier, and deeply inviting. Early frosts edge the ridges, wood smoke lingers in the air, and warm lights glow along Main Street and in cottage windows. This is a season for returning—not just to a place, but to a feeling.
By November, the leaves have mostly fallen, and the forest floor pulses with rust, bronze, and bare-branched silhouettes. Overnight lows dip below freezing, leaving frosted window panes and soft, crystalline coats on branches. On clear nights, ridgelines sparkle with that first dusting of snow—a delicate rim of white against deep evergreens. In those moments, the mountain wakes with a hush.

Every holiday season, the National Gingerbread House Competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn is one of Asheville’s sweetest draws. In 2025, the competition will be held on November 17, with public displays beginning November 18 through January 4.
Visitors can wander the halls of the Inn, marveling at intricate edible architecture—from whimsical cottages to sugar-laced masterpieces.
